The Upham Family of Killingly, CT

(I) John Upham embarked at Weymouth, England, with the Hull colony before Mar. 20, 1635, with his wife Elizabeth, aged 32 years, and children: John, aged 7; Nathaniel, aged 5; Elizabeth, aged 3; also Sarah, aged 26, probably John’s sister. John Upham was born in 1600. He settled at Weymouth. He removed to Malden, MA. Before his death he gave lands to Elizabeth, widow of his son Nathaniel, in 1662; to his son John in 1664; and to his son Phineas Feb. 2, 1670/1. He married (second) Katherine Holland, widow of angel Holland, she renouncing her claim to Holland’s estate at the time of this marriage. He was a brother in law of Robert Martin. He died Feb. 25, 1681, aged 84, according to the gravestone. His children were: John, born in England, 1628; Nathaniel, born 1630, in England; Elizabeth, born in England, 1632; Phineas, born in Weymouth; Thomas, born in Weymouth; Mary, born in Weymouth, married John Whittemore, died Jun. 27, 1677, had 6 children; Priscilla, married Thomas Crosswell, died a widow in 1717, having 12 children, she was probably born in 1642.
(II) Lieutenant Phineas Upham, son of John Upham (I) was born in 1635, at Weymouth, MA. He was the only son of John Upham, who left posterity, consequently he is progenitor of all Uphams of colonial ancestry. He married Ruth Wood, Apr. 14, 1658, at Malden. Lieutenant Upham was wounded in the battle of the Great Swamp Fort in Dec., 1675. He never recovered from his injuries. He was taken back to Malden, however, where he died in Oct. 1676. The widow was left with large family and little means, the general court voted her a small allowance for temporary needs. She died at the age of 60 years, Jan. 18, 1696/7. Her gravestone is to be seen at the old burying ground in Malden. She may have been the daughter of Obadiah Wood, biscuit maker, of Ipswich, who died there in 1694. His will probated Dec. 3, 1694, bequeathed to his wife, children, and to the children of his daughter Ruth, deceased, but there is an apparent discrepancy in the dates.
(III) Richard Upham, son of Lieutenant Phineas Upham (II), was born in Malden, MA, 1675. He married Abigail Hovey, of Topsfield, MA, May 19, 1698. She died Sept. 1, 1764, in her 85th year. Richard Upham owned land at Reading, although he was probably located all of the time on the old family homestead in Malden, which was set off in the new town of Reading. He purchased land in Thompson, CT, of Isaac Jewett in 1726, and conveyed it together with other subsequent purchases of land there to his son Ivory. He died according to church records, May 18, 1734. a stone marks his grave in the burying ground at So. Reading. The children of Richard and Abigail Upham were: Richard, died 1700; Ivory, born 1701; Abigail, born 1703, died Jan. 7, 1713/14; Dorcas, born 1707, died Jan. 22, 1715/16; Hepzibah, born 1710/11, married Nathaniel Longley, of Dorchester, MA, Jan. 29, 1756; Mary, spinster, of Malden; Ruth, born 1714, bapt. Dec. 6, 1714, died Jul. 7, 1769; Richard, born 1716, bapt. Dec. 9, 1716; Luke, born 1719, bapt. Mar. 20, 1719, probably died young; Luke, born 1721, died Apr. 23, 1731; Abigail, born 1721, died Nov., 1738; Susanna, married Ephraim Weston, Dec. 5, 1748.
(IV) Ivory Upham, son of Richard Upham (III), was born in Malden, MA, 1701. He married Tabitha___, who died Mar. 13, 1744. He married (second) Jane _____, who was admitted to the church sept. 28, 1746, from Sutton, MA, and died in Killingly, CT, Jan. 23, 1750/1. He married (third) Mary Haskol, of Beverly, MA, Jul. 2, 1752. he had a tract of land at Killingly left to him by his father and accordingly he settled there. he conveyed a parcel of land to his son Ivory, Jr., Feb. 9, 1756, twenty acres for five pounds according to Killingly records. On Jan. 18, 1730, Ivory Upham was one of twenty-eight persons to join the church. Ivory Upham died about 1756. His will proved 1756, mentions his sons: Ivory, Samuel and Luke only, indicating that the four youngest sons were not living then. The children of Ivory and Tabitha Upham were: Ivory, born at Charlestown, MA, bapt. at Reading, Oct. 4, 1724, married Jerusha Stone and lived in Thompson, CT; Samuel, born Jun. 14, 1726, in Malden, MA, married Esther Colburn, at Dudley, Nov. 7, 1750; Tabitha, bapt. Oct. 27, 1728; Abigail, born Sept. 19, 1730, of Killingly, CT, published at Dudley with William Coburn, Feb. 17, 1759; Luke, born Jun. 1, 1733, married Lois Sabin and lived at Killingly; Richard, born Mar. 24, 1734/5; John, born Feb. 9, 1736; Phineas, born Apr. 1, 1739; Ebenezer, born Mar. 15, 1740/1.
(V) Luke Upham, son of Ivory Upham (IV), was born in Killingly, CT, Jun. 1, 1733. He married Lois sabin, Mar. 28, 1759. She died Jun. 14, 1804. He died Nov. 7, 1815. Luke Upham was in the French and Indian war and a corporal in Capt. Chandler’s company (the 11th) in the revolution. The children of Luke and Lois Upham were: Abigail, born Jan. 7, 1761, died Nov. 27, 1829; Isaac, born Sept. 7, 1762, died Nov. 23, 1815; Chester, born Jun. 2, 1764, died Aug. 27, 1829; Nehemiah, born Apr. 20, 1766, died Apr. 15, 1799; Lucy, born Mar. 13, 1768, died May 16, 1834; Ephraim, born Nov. 22, 1770, died Nov. 22, 1850; Elizabeth, born Nov. 23, 1772, died Oct. 25, 1802, married _________ Trumbull and moved to Munson, MA; Hepzibah, born Oct. 24, 1774; Chloe, born Feb. 14, 1777, died Mar. 24, 1842; Phebe, born Feb. 24, 1778, married Daniel Taylor, of Worcester, MA, she died Canton, CT, Mar. 27, 1842; Huldah, born Jan. 23, 1783, died Feb. 5, 1824.
(VI) Nehemiah Upham, son of Luke Upham (V), was born at Killingly, CT, Aug. 20, 1766. He married Mary Town. He died Apr. 15, 1799. He was a farmer at Killingly. The children of Nehemiah and Mary were: Archelaus, born Jun. 14, 1792, married (first) Betsey Robinson, married (second) Nancy Morris, and lived in Killingly; Betsey, born Oct. 22, 1793, died Mar. 14, 1799; Dyer, born Nov. 26, 1795, married Esther Arnold, lived in Thompson, CT, and afterward in Wilsonville, CT; Ichabod, born Apr. 29, 1798, married Abigail Copeland, and lived in Union, CT; Nehemiah, born Oct. 22, 1799, died Feb. 24, 1800.
(VII) Dyer Upham, son of Nehemiah Upham (VI) , was born in Killingly, CT, Nov. 25, 1795. He married Esther Arnold, Mar. 19, 1820. She died in Thompson, CT, Sept. 7, 1824. He married (second), Nov. 20, 1827, Cynthia Arnold, who died in Thompson, Feb. 13, 1875. He was a farmer, and died at his son Dyer’s house Jan. 17, 1885, in Thompson, CT. The children of Dyer and Esther were: George Preston, born Jun. 25, 1821, in Hampton, CT, married Mercy T. Morris; Dyer Arnold, born Aug. 7, 1824, married Lucy Stone, and lived in Thompson.
(VIII) Dyer Arnold, son of Dyer Upson (VII) was born in Thompson, CT Aug. 7, 1824. He married, Nov. 11, 1849, Lucy Stone, daughter of Reuben Stone, who was born in Dudley, MA, Nov. 10, 1829, and died in Thompson, Aug. 3, 1885. He was a farmer and store keeper, living at Thompson and later Wilsonville, CT (1905). The children of Dyer Arnold and Lucy Upham were: Leroy J., born Mar. 23, 1851, in Thompson, married Aug. 16, 1877, Nora Janette Joslin, daughter of John and Caroline Joslin, who was born Aug. 11, 1856; Earl Hammond, born Jan. 14, 1855, in Thompson, married Nov. 14, 1883, Alice M. Hall, lived at Providence, RI, 1889, had no children at that time; Burton Stone, born Mar. 27, 1870, in Thompson, lived there in 1889
