Mathewson Family of Woodstock, CT

(I) James Mathewson was at Providence, RI, as early as 1658. He married Hannah Field, daughter of John Field, and he died in 1682. After James Mathewson’s death his his widow Hannah married Henry Brown and she died after 1703.
James and Hannah Mathewson had the following children:
1. Ruth, married Benjamin Whipple, Apr. 1, 1686
2. James, born Aug. 11, 1666, married Elizabeth Clemmence, Apr. 5, 1696
3. Lieutenant John, married Deliverance Malavery, Nov. 17, 1698
4. Isabel, married John Brown June 9, 1696, she died after 1719
5. Thomas, born Apr. 1, 1673, died Oct. 23, 1735, married Martha Field and had:
Martha; Deborah born 1719; Thomas and Amos
6. Lydia
7. Zachariah, married 1st Sarah ____, married 2nd Joanna Eddy Aug. 4, 1746, had 9 children by 1st wife.
8. Daniel, born Jan. 28, 1683, died Jun. 13, 1751, married 1st Sarah Inman Feb. 10, 1704, 2nd Esther_____, 3rd Chatity Inman Sept. 26, 1742, 4th Lydia Motague Jul. 12, 1747.

(II) Lieutenant John Mathewson died Sept. 18, 1716, married Deliverance Malvery Nov. 17, 1698, daughter of John and Elizabeth Malvery. Lieutenant John and Deliverance Malvery Mathewson had the following children:

3. Daniel, born Mar. 5, 1704
4. Elizabeth, born Dec. 21, 1706, married her cousin James Mathewson, Jr., born 1702, lived in Scituate, RI.

6. Ann, born Jan. 21, 1712
7. Jemima, born Jul. 10, 1715

(III) Israel Mathewson, born Jan. 3, 1708/9, will dated Nov. 19, 1778, probated Jan. 1779, proved Feb. 8, 1779. Wife’s name unknown. His brother John deeded him 30 acres in Providence, RI, on May 20, 1732. On Aug. 31, 1776 he deeded to Samuel Steere, Jr., the “ homestead farm where I now dwell,” on the northeast corner of Noswansicut Pond, Johnston, RI. His will is dated Nov. 19, 1778, and proved Feb. 8, 1779. At the time of his will, he was of Ashford, CT. His children were:
1. Jonathan. On May 31, 1810 he and his wife Elizabeth, deeded to Squire Thurber, of Killingly, CT his farm in Johnston, RI.
2. Zebedee, married Rebecca Corps Sept. 1793, daughter of John Corps, of East Greenwich, RI.
3. Israel, married Lydia Saunders, Nov. 9, 1772, daughter of Henry Saunders. (see forward)
4. William, born Sept. 28, 1745, Johnston, RI., married Tabitha Chaffee, Mar. 17, 1780, Woodstock, CT. (see forward)
5. John, married Avis Aldrrich, March, 1773, Gloucester, RI., daughter of Joseph Aldrich

7. Nathan born 1756 or 1757, married Dec. 24, 1786 at Pomfret, CT, Susannah Arnold. David Perrin of Woodstock deeded to Nathan Mathewson of Pomfret, CT, 30 acres in Woodstock, CT on the Pomfret line, Jun. 30, 1791. Nathan died at Woodstock, CT Aug. 7, 1826, aged 69. Susannah his wife died either before or at the same time as her husband. Their children were :
Philip born Apr. 10, 1791 in Pomfret, CT lived in Ohio and died before Sept. 1827 and had Emilia and William; Hannah born 1792, died Oct. 1795 Woodstock; George born Mar. 29, 1795 Woodstock, CT, married Apr. 4, 1824, Esther Seamans, both of Woodstock, CT, had Clarissa born Jan. 14, 1825 who married John P. Kingsley of Norwich, CT and George Prescott who was born Feb. 21, 1827 ; David born Jan. 26, 1801 Woodstock, CT, died Aug. 22, 1823; Arnold born Jan. 26, 1801, Woodstock, died Jun. 28, 1822; and perhaps Nancy who died Nov. 22, 1821; and perhaps Betsey who died Nov. 6, 1822, at Woodstock, CT.
8. David, born May 11, 1760, born May 11, 1760, died Hartwick, NY Dec. 31, 1822. He married before Nov. 1785, Betsey, daughter of Thomas and Joanna Powers Smith of Scituate, RI. She was born May 13, 1759 at Scituate and died at Hartwick, Aug. 10, 1841. She was a Quaker. His will is dated Apr. 11, 1822 and probated Jan. 20, 1823. They had:
Joanna married _______ Windsor; Sarah; Lucina married _____ Roberts; Betsey married _____ Luther; Mary died Mar. 21, 1813 aged 21; Rhoda died Mar. 22, 1813 aged 12; Elijah; Thomas S.; David; Laban.

(IV) Israel Mathewson, married Lydia Saunders, Nov. 9, 1772, Johnston, RI. He was deeded land in New Roxbury (Woodstock, CT) from Leicester Paine. His will is dated Jun. 5, 1815, Woodstock, CT and probated at Providence, RI, Apr. 14, 1822, and at Pomfret, CT, May 10, 1821.
The children of Israel and Lydia Saunders Mathewson were:
1. Susannah, born Mar. 4, 1776, died Jan. 16, 1853, married John Chandler, who died Feb. 23, 1801, both buried Pomfret, CT. They had:
Cyprian, born Sept. 2, 1798, married Maria Lyon, lived in Wisconsin, had 4 children; Miranda, born May 8, 1800, married William P. Goodale, lived in Wisconsin.
2. Israel, born Apr. 25, 1779 married Feb. 11, 1802, Catherine Williams, daughter of Peleg Williams, of Foster, RI. Israel died Dec. 22, 1843 aged 64 and his wife Catherine died Apr. 24, 1846 aged 69. His farm in Woodstock, was on the Pomfret line. Their children were:
Mary Randell born Sept. 15, 1802 married William Taylor of Scituate, RI Aug. 20, 1826; Horatio Bowen born Mar. 4, 1804 died, Nov. 1856 unmarried; Charles born Jun. 14, 1806 died about 1890, married Jan. 1, 1841 Celia Hammond of Woodstock and had Francis M, John, Emeline, Gilbert and David; James Valentine, born June, probably died young; Edwin, born Jun. 18____ father of H. Mathewson of Webster, MA; Percival, died about 1890, father of Rev. Everett P. Mathewson of Ashaway, RI; Louisa Catherine, probably died young; Samuel Williams, married Harriet and had Helen Niollia born Feb. 12, 1842; Israel, died Sept. 1823
3. Lydia, married a Shepperd.
4. Orpha, married John Alton, Jr.
5. Phila, born 1787, died Nov. 7, 1861.

(IV). William, born Sept. 28, 1745, Johnston, RI., married Tabitha Chaffee, Mar. 17, 1780, Woodstock, CT. They lived at Woodstock and Union, CT., removed about 1806 to Cooperstown, NY, where they lived for one year, then to Triangle, NY. He died Jan. 1, 1835, and his wife Tabitha died 1841. Thy are buried at Upper Lisle, Broom Co., NY. Tabitha was probably daughter of Benjamin and Hannah Skinner Chaffee.
5. John, married Avis Aldrich, March, 1773, Gloucester, RI., daughter of Joseph Aldrich. William and Tabitha Chaffee Mathewson had the following children:
1. William, born before 1785, lived at Schoharie, and later Canada, married Betsey Wood in 1819. Betsey Wood was born in NH. He died in Perth, Ontario, Nov. 25, 1852, leaving a widow. No children.
2. Tabitha, born 1785-90, died Apr. 25, 1850, married John Shipley. Had:
William; Orren F.; Lucy married J. Hilton.
3. Prudence, born 1785-90, married _____ Rose, died 1853 in IL. Had:
Rhoda Ann, married James Madison; John M, lived Clinton, Wisconsin; Marilla married _______ Eastman, of Buffalo, NY; Janette married Rev. Trowbridge of Belfast, NY; Moriah married _______ Clute, Perry, NY; Mary born 1822, died 1907, married William Burlingham, Beloit, Wisconsin; Sarah Almira married 1st______Van Schaick 2nd ____Constable; John.
4. Joseph, born Feb. 28, 1790. When 16 years old he went to Triangle, NY. He married Eliza Stickney. He died 1845 and his widow married second Charles Mathewson, who died 1871. Children of Joseph and Eliza were:

5. Mary, born Jul. 19, 1791, married Joel Clinton, born Ballston, NY, Jun. 7, 1784, died Toddsville, NY, Apr. 19, 1835, son of John and Mary Scribner Clinton. She died Clintonville, NY, Apr. 11, 1870. Had:

Robinson who was born Aug. 14, 1810 and died Oct. 26, 1880. lived at Corning, NY; Lucina born June 1815, died Clintonville, NY Oct. 30, 1876; Harriet born 1817 died Adams, MA Oct. 2, 1839; Mary born Nov. 22, 1818 died Oct. 26, 1893 married May 19, 1842 William Lake born Jan. 1, 1819 died Aug. 14, 1890 lived Toddsville, NY; Andrew B. born Sept. 23, 1820 died Wilford, NY Sept 4, 1900 married 1st Dec. 1, 1843 Hannah Montgomery born Aug. 12, 1822, died Dec. 1865, married 2nd in 1869, Alida Van Slyke; William born May 2, 1822 died Feb. 21, 1880 married 1st, Julia Leonard born 1818, died Dec. 8, 1852, married 2nd, Caloina Terry, born Oct 29, 1827, died Oneonta, NY Aug. 19, 1899; Sarah Maria born Apr. 23, 1824, died Cleveland, Ohio Dec. 2, 1905, married in Boston, MA Dec. 23, 1847, Rev. Orren Perkins, born Savoy, MA Aug. 11, 1823, died Chicago, IL,Oct. 30, 1880; Cyrus Henry, born 1826, died Nov. 2, 1901, married Oct. 29, 1863, Emiline Smith, born May 22, 1830; Celia Ann, born 1828, died Aug. 1876, married William Mathewson, her cousin.
