JOHNSON/WHEELOCK/BROWN/GORTON
2-27-2001 jmallie@msn.com, James Allie,
Seeking clues about the Johnson family in Charlton. Two Johnson women (Bulah
b. abt. 1752 and Lucy) married two Wheelock brothers. Paul 5 Wheelock married
Bulah 9-30-1779 and Seth 5 Wheelock married Lucy 4-9-1805. According to
Walter T. Wheelock, Bulah died Spencer Mass 2-1-1824 age 72 and Lucy died
died 9-11-1824. I suspect they were sisters. I did find a Ruhamah Beulah
Johnson (b.1634/35) daughter of William Johnson and Elizabeth Story of Charlestown
Mass. Some of her brothers and nephews moved to Newbury, Haverhill and Marlbourgh
Mass. I do not know if those towns are close Charlton. I am also seeking
any information on Hope (Brown) Gorton (b. Providence RI 1762) m. 2-13-1787
(Providence or Pomfret Ct) John Gorton. Hope died in Charlton 2-22-1811
or 1812. John died in Charlton 9-15-1838 and is buried in the Northside
Cemetery with his sons Sanford Gorton (b. Charlton 4-15-1796 d. Charlton
1832 or 1833) and Independence Whipple Gorton (b. Charlton 1801 d. Charlton
1873). Sanford married Roxa Wheelock (daughter of Paul and Bulah above)
and the two lived in Charlton.
DEXTER
3/1/2001 jmallie@msn.com James Allie
I am trying to identify the parents of James Dexter (b. abt.1792 Charlton
MA, d. Poland, Herkimer County New York). LDS files and one of the Gorton
Genealogies shows James Dexter as the son of Nathan Dexter of Charlton.
According to a 19th century Dexter Genealogy I borrowed from NEHGS and Family
Tree Maker's Massachusetts Vital Records 1600s-1800s, Nathan Dexter was
born 1759/1760 in Smithfield R.I. and died June 20, 1846 in Charlton. Nathan
married either Nancy Warner (Dexter Genealogy and one Gorton Genealogy)
or Alcy Warner (LDS and one Gorton Genealogy) or perhaps both. Arnold's
Vital Records of Rhode Island (1636-1850) indicates that Freelove Dexter,
daughter of Major Nathan Dexter of Charlton married Isaac Jencks, Esq. at
Cumberland R.I. in 1820. Major Nathan Dexter of Charlton may be the father
or brother of James, as the Dexter Genealogy shows Nathan (b. 1760) had
a son Nathan born in 1782 in Smithfield, but shows no son named James. Phebe
Dexter, the last of Nathan's children according to the Dexter Genealogy
was born in Smithfield in 1789, whereas James appears to have been born
about 1792, perhaps in Charlton. James Dexter married Hope Ann Gorton before
1825. Hope Ann was the daughter of John and Hope (Brown) Gorton of Charlton,
MA. James Dexter and his brother in law John Anthony Gorton moved from Charlton
to Poland, Herkimer County, New York before 1825. They ran an ax and scythe
manufacturing business together. According to the Gorton Genealogies, in
1846 James Dexter's daughter Avis Dexter married her cousin Oliver Gorton
(b.10-21-1821 Charlton). Oliver was the son of Sanford Gorton of Charlton.
Oliver and Avis settled in upstate N.Y. Hope Ann and John Anthony Gorton's
older brother George Brown Gorton married Phebe the daughter of Nathan Dexter.
Clearly there was a connection between the families of Nathan Dexter (b.
1760) and John Gorton (b. 1765). Both families moved from Rhode Island to
Charlton MA, intermarried on at least one occasion and perhaps had sons
(James and John Anthony) who settled in the small village of Poland in the
Town of Russia in Herkimer County, New York

STOW/WARD/JONES

Am searching for data on Sarah Jones-Stow - I have the William Ward book
published in 1863 that shows Sarah married a Benjamin? Stow (another researcher
feels she married Nathaniel Stow) - after he died she re-married Jonas Ward
1786 - shortly after the marriage they disappeared from MA - it is believed
they may have gone to VA and on to Marietta, OH (or at least I have tracked
them down to there) - found them in The First Congregational Church in Marietta,
OH. Am trying to find if they had a son named Jonas Jr. supposedly born
in 1790 VA. Sarah was born Jan 10, 1738/39 in Framingham, Middlesex, MA
dau of John Jones, Jr. - she died June 16, 1830 in Charlton, MA at the age
of 91. Am tearing MA and OH up trying to locate information/verification
that they did have a son named Jonas Jr. Figure if they did Jonas Jr. was
an accident as he was born 4 years after the marriage and she had already
had several children by the previous marriage.

JONES/DAGGETT
April 14,2001 Richard Jones rjones03@rochester.rr.com
Seth Corbett Jones and his wife Mary (Daggett) lived in Charlton during
the last part of the 1700's to early 1800's. I am attempting to learn some
info about them, ie. was he a revolutionary war veteran? were they active
in the Congregationalist Church, if so does it still exist? where did they
live? was he a businessman, politician or public figure? where are they
buried? I have a record of their childrens names, births, marriages, and
most deaths. They had a son Samuel Jones. He married Matilda Davis in 1798.
They had several children, namely Reuben, Seth, Ezra, and possibly Mary,
but I only know for certain that Ezra was born in1807 in the Village of
Madison, NY. Samuel was a lawyer but I do not know if he received his education
at Harvard. I am not sure how long Samuel and Matilda resided in Charlton
after their marriage in 1798 but I do know that they moved to the Vil of
Madison, NY before 1807. I believe Matilda died in Madison and Samuel left
his children there because he came to the Rochester, NY area around 1810
alone and married again around 1815. If anyone has info on the above I would
appreciate your assistance, or any info and contacts I could make at churches,
libraries of local history, public records or any other useful Info. Thank
you in advance for any help.
